- nathancahill 5y agoAh yes, <title>[object Object]</title>
- JediPig 5y agoill give the short answer to this. millions depend on notepad. a small change , can have devastating effects. What if the editor doesn't respond to the same WM_XYZMESSAGE? what if your enterprise depends on an obscure app that modifies notepad. So no, best option create a new editor, but there are 1000 editors out there. look at sublime text 4.. its pure opengl. fast, and epic done right.

- csunbird 5y agoThe parent comment was definitely a sarcasm. I am not sure if yours is.
- scintill76 5y agoWon't somebody please think of backcompat with the Notepad raytracer?![1] [1] http://kylehalladay.com/blog/2020/05/20/Rendering-With-Notepad.html http://kylehalladay.com/blog/2020/05/20/Rendering-With-Notep...
- drewzero1 5y agoFor a while I did a job where I had need for a text editor but wasn't allowed to install my own programs on my work computer. I tried using Notepad for a bit but switched to Code Writer and found it an acceptable solution. It seemed to me at the time Microsoft was considering that their 'modern' Notepad alternative(?). I haven't seen much about it since though.
- redleggedfrog 5y agoAh yes, trade a small, easily fixed, bug for a life-time of JS induced jank. No thank you.
- sergiomattei 5y agoThe parent comment meant it as sarcasm.
- ahmedalsudani 5y agoPoe strikes again.
- redleggedfrog 5y agosigh Well, I certainly shot myself in the foot that time. Thank you Sergio for slapping some sense into me.
- augusto-moura 5y agoI mean, React Native is not a bad choice for a "new notepad", similar to how they did with the calculator. It can even get the "Microsoft OpenSource Project" seal. See ReactXP[1] a library for React Native from Microsoft Speaking about the calculator app, did you know it is OpenSource[2]? You can only compile to windows as of now though [1]: https://github.com/Microsoft/reactxp https://github.com/Microsoft/reactxp [2]: https://github.com/microsoft/calculator https://github.com/microsoft/calculator
- cjaybo 5y agoThe new calculator is written with UWP and C++, right? I'm failing to see the similarity.
- augusto-moura 5y agoThe similarity is just the revamp in a old already established UI, nothing to do with React specifically
- gruez 5y ago> This would be avoided if Notepad was implemented in React Native for Windows. Why? I suppose if your render() function had something like showAstrix = this.state.editorBuffer != this.state.savedBuffer then it wouldn't be subject to the bug, but the performance would be terrible if you're editing a large file. To get good performance you'd need to use a flag and update it accordingly, which will subject you to the same bug.
- Sohcahtoa82 5y agoYou do have me wondering now how long it takes to compare large strings. DDR4-3200 has a peak transfer rate of 25.6 GB/s. So if you were editing a ridiculously large 1 GB text file, you could only make that comparison ~12.8 times per second, and that's assuming the CPU could compare data that fast.
- cptskippy 5y agoWhy not Electron?
- Communitivity 5y agoWhy not Squeak or Oberon?
- ampdepolymerase 5y agoWhy not Common Lisp and Mcclim?
- alphachloride 5y agoOr TkInter in python?
- granshaw 5y agoCan’t tell if serious...
- chapium 5y agoA rewrite in Rust would be better tbph.
- JoblessWonder 5y agoIt seems like some people are a little too serious for the internet today...
- msla 5y agoOr if it were implemented in my planned record-oriented logic language, a mix of COBOL and Coq called CoqBOL.

- amingilani 5y agoOr if they wrote to a database on change and read on every cycle. For correctness, blockchain may be suitable.

- dumpsterdiver 5y agoI was aghast when I read this comment until I realized it was sarcasm, and then I got a good laugh thinking about the look I still had on my face. It made me wonder... how many people in any given echo chamber are simply fanning the fire due to a misunderstanding? Probably a lot.
- bellyfullofbac 5y agoLast week there was an article about how a tool that monitor WhatsApp contacts' online status can be used to stalk. Because I was bored I did a DDG search, and the top result was a Github repo of a Chrome extension that promised such monitoring. The readme was in broken English and hat lots of emojis, it had 500+ commits so I thought "Must be an active developer". Looking through the commits, the majority of them were "Changed readme" with single line changes to the readme file...
- vmception 5y agoOkay that is hilarious I would drop everything and try to compromise a nested dependency
