I hate that we're seeing this nonsense again, we've just got chrome in place of IE
- smusamashah 5y agoIt's not for use on phone, therefore chrome desktop.
- oh_sigh 5y agoHow much does the creator of this random website owe you? If they got their prototype working on chrome, should they hold off on releasing it to the world because someone might want to use the site on an old build of Opera on Android? This is a completely free site from appearances. No asking you for money, no sign ups, no donations, no (apparent) data collection, no ads, it doesn't even set any cookies. Perhaps just find a way to run the site on chrome on desktop if you really want to visit the site. Or run it on your browser of choice but accept that it may not behave as intended. If you don't want to do that, then you can just continue with the rest of your life not using the site just like you have for every moment previous to this.
- exmadscientist 5y ago"I only tested this in Chrome, using anything else is at your own risk" is fine. Life's short. "Needs feature X, only available in Chrome" is also fine. It's clear and to the point and tells anyone who cares about browser Y exactly what's (probably) wrong. "Desktop Chrome only, everyone else go away" is contemptuously lazy. It really does reek of the IE days, for those who remember them, and is extremely off-putting. For me, this page doesn't do any of the above, it just does the best it can (which isn't really good enough on this phone). That's also fine. It's a phone, I get that it isn't good at everything.
- julestothetee 5y ago(Adding to your comment) It's not the developer's fault per se. If it's a pet project, it's arguably fine to cut the corner of cross-browser testing. The systemic problem is that Chrome has such high market share (like IE used to have) that developers are tempted to take such shortcuts. Do web developers have a higher social duty to test cross-browser during development? Depends on how strongly you believe in the dream of the web, I guess. Is it your duty not to litter in public? Sure. Is it your duty to pick up litter you find on the side of the street? Probably not.
- googlryas 5y agoI almost believed your post until I changed my useragent and saw the popup. There is a popup with the title: "Use Chrome on a desktop please!" with the text "Right now, the web version of Stamper is only supported in Google Chrome for desktop." That doesn't sound like a "Go away" to me. That sounds like a "We only support Chrome and so don't complain if its broken on something else". If it really was a "go away", they wouldn't even let you enter the app if you had the wrong useragent. Instead, you just click past the dialog and you get whatever experience your useragent allows with the code.
