I wonder how much of that is due to living situation. If you live in a city with lots of traffic and they have to cross dangerous intersections to get to a park, I can see why you'd worry about them. But even then, 11 years old sounds ridiculous. Almost every kid walks to school on their own at age 7 here in Austria, so I really don't understand how over-protective some parents are.
