There's a model of drone listed in the article that is the right size and has the capabilities attributed to the drones we were seeing. We're near an air force base and a lot of people around here are either ex-air force or plane enthusiasts. A lot of people are watching the sky and know what's normal, what's not, and are able to identify the wide variety of planes that come in and out of the base.
I'm not good at IDing the different types of planes, but what I was seeing were not the usual suspects. I've seen them come low enough to tell that they were not large enough to be passenger aircraft. And believe me, I know a crop duster when I see it. Dad and my husband can both tell you what what they're looking at and what it's for from a good distance and at night. They both are certain that what we were seeing wasn't a known model.
It's a little irritating to hear that us Midwestern folks just don't know a drone from a jet. It's kind of in our blood in this area to always be watching the skies.

Generation Kill - "The soldiers are fooled by “autokinesis”[1], shown through Brad’s scope and explained as the involuntary muscle movements of the observing soldier’s eye producing the illusion of the lights of the town a few miles away moving towards them, as if it were an army on the move" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autokinetic_effect https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autokinetic_effect Midwestern folks get mass hysteria and fooled by optical illusions just like the rest of the world. I don't know what you personally saw or how it fits in though.
- msrenee 6y agoI promise you, I was observing either extremely small airplanes or fairly large drones. This wasn't some lights on the horizon. This was a set of lights that looked exactly like a large drone, plus the outline of the vehicle partially visible due to the lights of the town, that I watched maneuver in all directions from the familiar vantage point of my apartment courtyard. I also passed under them more than once on my commute to my overnight job, as well as observing them over the fields on either side of the interstate. This was the same commute I'd been making for months before these things started appearing and continued driving for a year after they stopped showing up. I've spent a lot of hours driving in this area, day and night, with nothing better to watch than the crop dusters pulling off crazy stunts for the sake of saving time. You ever seen them fly under power lines? They do it once in a while. It's a stupid risk and super fucking impressive at the same time. It's the Midwest. You watch the sky, see how the corn and beans are coming along, and try not to hit deer. Those were either very small manned planes flying at a time of day those vehicles rarely operate or they were some kind of drone. Either way, something weird was going on. You want to tell me the UFO I swear I saw in high school was my eyes playing tricks on me at 4 am? Yeah, you're probably right. These however were something I saw, personally and repeatedly, in an area where I'm very familiar with what's normally in the sky.
