IPTIA Fidonet/Usenet Message Archive
- rsync 6y agoWe (rsync.net) will give you free service, forever, for the purposes of backing up this resource. Please be in touch (info@rsync.net) to discuss. Thank you for doing this - especially the fidonet part. EDIT: also, for anyone reading this with an interest ... I have been discussing on and off with some folks that I believe have archives of a BBS echo list named "CCi" or "Cybercrime International" from the early 90s ... if anyone has alternative sources for these it would be appreciated as my own efforts keep stalling out ...
- bbarnett 6y agoI wonder if anyone has anything from the early 80s. So much lost stuff.
- afturkrull 6y ago> I wonder if anyone has anything from the early 80s. So much lost stuff. Do people really want their ancient ramblings preserved indefinitely?
- floatingatoll 6y agoHell no, I don’t. But it’s apparently impossible to stop people who are dedicated to indexing it at all costs. It took me five years to purge everything from before the Dejapocalypse. When we were using Fidonet back in the dialup era, it was a safe space. Plugging that into today’s internet is not safe and comes across as a violation of basic decency and respect for that space.
- tallship 6y agoIndeed they/we do.
- jafo 6y agoCheck the net.* usenet groups. net is the one of the oldest usenet hierarchies, stretching back to the early 1980s, even before the great renaming.
- unixhero 6y agoThere are new posts. Is FIDO still alive? How can I get set up and try it out?
- anthk 6y agotelnet/ssh/https to synchro.net BBS.
- pabs3 6y agoWhat does the backend storage for the archive look like? Did Fidonet have the equivalent of Message-ID in email?
- qsi 6y agoIt's a great initiative! I have fond memories of FidoNet in the olden days (wrote a scanner/tosser at one point) and would love to see more of it preserved. The Fido contents here look very limited with only a small smattering of echos, primarily from the US. One of my to-do's is to go through a stack of old 5.25" floppies that may contain some old echomail. Life tends to get in the way these days...
