A similar feeling I get from some of the Paradox games, they claim to be complicated simulations etc, but eventually much of gameplay boils down to waiting for progress bars to fill, which is exactly what is the gameplay in idle-clicker phone games. Thats what got me out of Paradox games. Even Civilization games are essentially computerized board games, there is nothing of fidelity in its historical topics or in its simulation aspects.
