Tesla safety report claims to be 2x safer than other cars
- pja 5y agoGreat. Now do the comparison with vehicles that have equivalent driver populations. Tesla's are not (on average) bring bought by the most dangerous drivers, so comparing them with the average US driver is being deliberately disingenuous. What's the per mile accident rate for < 2 year old $40k+ purchase price vehicles? That's a more interesting comparison I would argue.
- cblconfederate 5y agoThe interesting thing is their active safety features appear to reduce tesla's accident rate 50%. the other comparisons are not valid
- pja 5y agoDo the active safety measures turn themselves off at the first sign of trouble like the self driving does? Because if so that would constitute a very biased sample! (Hopefully not - these kind of safety measures are fairly well established in other marques at this point.)
- sunstone 5y agoPerhaps the issue here is that Autopilot and active safety features are more likely to be activated in highway driving rather than city driving which is messier. These stats might look quite different if the metric was accidents per hour of driving rather than accidents per mile of driving. In addition, most people's safety concerns are more about how safe the car is when it's in an accident. A car accident you walk away from unhurt is an inconvenience whereas an accident in which you're injured can have lasting quality of life implications.
- Traster 5y agoThis has always seemed like marking your own homework to be honest, not only is it pretty worthless but it makes me trust them less.
