Isn't it obvious? Goodreads doesn't need to make money on its own. It's a customer acquisition and retention tool for Amazon. The same way as DPReview is. They both are good for communities and don't try to be anything else or overload users with ads. They are just basic communities with tons of content. To make a better Goodreads one first needs to make a better book store than Amazon, better reader than Kindle, and better audio book service than Audible. Goodreads and these services are in a virtuous flywheel.
