I think a lot of it is just believing in the goals. If we want to see humans going to Mars in any larger capacity than a one off mission in our lifetimes, Spacex seems like the only path to that. Elon is a complicated figure, but no one else has been able to make these big bets to get into the same position. At least not in a successful way.
