This in my mind is THE issue of our time - The concept of shared sacrifice has vanished as we divide people (and allow others to divide us) into tribal groups (urban vs rural, wealth, education level, ethnic or religious group, NIMBY, etc.) for the most part it’s always “we” need to do something but “they” are the ones that need to do it/pay for it. It’s I hear people advocate for a position that either a) benefits them directly b) benefits another (making them feel good) with an expense that don’t have to bear. Rarely do I hear someone advocate for something that is going to meaningfully negatively affect them.
- maeil 5y agoEven worse, one of the most common sacrifices that a small number of people do make is going vegetarian or vegan, yet those sacrifices often invite derision, even in online spaces that generally are thought of to be progressive. "A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they shall never sit."
- ssijak 5y agoFor me, going vegan never felt as a sacrifice.
