Her money quote (in more ways than one):
I think most people tend to be supportive of specific political issues in theory, but only as long as it doesn't affect their day-to-day.
At least that's how I rationalize why the Bay Area is very left-leaning but reluctant to have e.g. homeless shelters nearby. Compare with how many Americans near the southern border voted for Trump but vehemently opposed having the wall built on their land.
- cascom 6y agoThis in my mind is THE issue of our time - The concept of shared sacrifice has vanished as we divide people (and allow others to divide us) into tribal groups (urban vs rural, wealth, education level, ethnic or religious group, NIMBY, etc.) for the most part it’s always “we” need to do something but “they” are the ones that need to do it/pay for it. It’s I hear people advocate for a position that either a) benefits them directly b) benefits another (making them feel good) with an expense that don’t have to bear. Rarely do I hear someone advocate for something that is going to meaningfully negatively affect them.
- maeil 6y agoEven worse, one of the most common sacrifices that a small number of people do make is going vegetarian or vegan, yet those sacrifices often invite derision, even in online spaces that generally are thought of to be progressive. "A society grows great when old men plant trees in whose shade they know they shall never sit."
- ssijak 6y agoFor me, going vegan never felt as a sacrifice.
