I've found Scala to be more intimidating to approach than the average non-functional language because the people who tend to use and write about it are of a relatively high level of expertise. I'm rather sold on it, though. I've been warily learning it in dribs and drabs for about a year, and one of these days will actually write something that accomplishes a task.
