When profits are being made, who cares what happens to future generations.
Cryptocurrency is, for the most part, a contagion. We opened Pandora's box and the genie is out of the bottle. Short of some kind of cataclysmic black swan event, I'm not sure this insanity will end anytime soon. :(
- meowface 5y agoThis is one of the few energy consumers that has a pretty straightforward solution: switch to proof of stake. You can't magically switch all existing cars to be 100% electric, but you actually can kind of magically switch all cryptocurrencies to consume orders of magnitude less energy. The question is if Bitcoin will ever try to switch to it. Unfortunately, it seems like they probably won't anytime soon.
- SwimSwimHungry 5y agoAs much as I loathe cryptocurrency as a concept, a switch across the board to PoS would certainly be a welcome change to massively decrease this abhorrent waste in energy.
- _carbyau_ 5y agoEthereum 2.0 is POS apparently. I haven't figure out how to get onboard yet though. I have to do a bunch of homework to figure out what the hell means what. I don't have 32 ETH ($70k odd USD) so I have to join a staking pool but then that means I won't be running a validator I think. In which case this seems like simply just buying some ETH2.0 but it clearly isn't... so I have no idea honestly... More homework required on my part. Anyone have a good link with an overview of the moving parts AND motivations of the ETH2.0 structure?
- SwimSwimHungry 5y agoIt is a bit funny how obtuse some of this cryptocurrency stuff can actually be, which honestly is a great thing, if it means less of the inexperienced can participate at all.
