> I argued with a few people at the time, including the book's author [who came across as a bit of an arrogant arsehole] that; seeing as the book seemed to be pretty much the only recommended beginner's guide to the language, the people behind Nim should bung the author a wodge of cash and make the ebook available for free [as pretty much every other programming language does, in some way or another] if they wanted to attract new users.
Wow, I'm really sorry if I came across that way to you (I'm the author btw). Can you recall where the discussion took place so I can understand what happened?
For what it's worth: I don't personally view Nim in Action as the de facto manual. The Nim programming language has always had an official tutorial[1] as well as a reference manual[2], plus various other freely available resources to learn it[3]. Nim in Action wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for the publisher (Manning) supporting me in writing it. Because of this the choice of whether to release it for free or not was never in the hands of me or the Nim community, it's up to the publisher.
What we could have done differently is had me not take the opportunity to write the book and instead go the self-publishing route, but as someone who has had no prior experience writing books and no money I doubt I would have had the motivation to complete such a feat.
