- rfoo 5y agoFor engineers with enough time (and able to do troubleshooting), no, no advantages. For everyone else, they do have advantage, most thing you wanted is 1 click away, including something tedious for average "power users", like "using btrfs safely with RAID-5-like disk array" (so that you can take a snapshot of your drive) mentioned here.
- jbverschoor 5y agoIt's actually very user friendly.. You can buy a DSM license to install on a normal machine

- jbverschoor 5y agoI'm quite positive I've seen it for custom hardware.. but it seems VDSM is only available (officially) for Synology devices. https://www.synology.com/en-global/products/VDSM_License_Pack https://www.synology.com/en-global/products/VDSM_License_Pac... I know xpenology uses the official software, but I'm not sure if that is legal.
