In Switzerland, they punch in your account number, tap send, and then wait until the next business day for it to go through (for no technical reason at all, sometimes payments do go through instantly, usually next business day, because the law says they need to do it by next business day at noon). That's still fine for a friend to pay you for a pizza, because you know they'll actually pay you, but sometimes you still want instant payment confirmation. It's not just the US.
