There’s a culture of life hacking and microoptimizing that promotes following conclusions made on pvalues and averages as a key to the promised land (re: “trust science” as a replacement for religious style identity and morality even).
In the reverse direction, non academic population’s desire for popular science seems to lead with a carrot and incentivize studies like this (I think about this like trying to objectify relative efficiency multipliers of -personal- study habits?).
It’s the same thing as always: who has the time to think critically about every aspect of life. I think these things are just assurances to reduce that anxiety of uncertainty.
Whether pen vs keyboard is the “best” option according to the given study, there will be folks who are naturally on the “losing” side of the distribution whose habits are not supported by the conclusion. I think it can cause some cognitive dissonance when these folks are encouraged to force themselves to do what science said was best; even when is not what is best for them.
- jvalencia 6y agoThe bell curve means, by definition, that some non zero amount of people will not cluster around the mean. This is where the notion of personalized learning really comes into place. - threatofrain 6y agoIMO the culture will go to the keyboard because the web is the medium in which your notes obtain a social dimension. Otherwise they are isolated paper notes meant to be discarded after the class is done (unless you are the kind of person who boxes your notes).

- Quarrelsome 6y ago> I think about this like trying to objectify relative efficiency multipliers of -personal- study habits? makes me wonder what happens if you cut the data by: > frequently picks their nose do you think the bonus zen of mindless nose picking is offset enough by the drag of increased chance of nose infection reducing total study time?
- ksm1717 6y agoThere are two options to improve our model: We can include nose picking rate as an independent variable, or we can recommend that everyone pick the same amount of nose.
- Quarrelsome 6y agoJust think of the headlines we will write! NOSE KNOWS BEST!
