I hear you, that's really rough. It's a very strange industry where things are so feast and famine, and there seem to be a lot of people who haven't seen both sides of that. These are the people who always say, "Why don't you just X?" I certainly don't have a solution, but I do get the impression that there are more developers than there are jobs and this is why many companies can afford to be more arbitrary in their selection process.
