At this point don’t the benefits of continuing to using both the J&J and AstraZeneca vaccines far outweighs the costs?
And we have already accepted that there may be long term side effects that we won’t be able to detect because we have decided to rush these vaccines into use because of the huge benefits.
Isn’t this just another case of the excessive caution by regulators? White House says decision taken out of “abundance of caution.”
For each prevented blood clotting death the decision will cause many more additional deaths from Covid. It’s not just the delay in vaccinating some people but also tainting the popular perception of these and other vaccines.
- thehappypm 6y agoThe US has already flattened the curve substantially with our vax rollout, deaths are curving down hard, cases are down 80% from peak. J&J is about 5% of all vax doses given. It hasn't really been very helpful so far and it doesn't really make sense to keep it in rotation if it's dangerous and Pfizer and Moderna are the main workhorses anyway. If I was in a country with no alternatives, it would be a fundamentally different calculus.
- spikels 6y ago> J&J is about 5% of all vax doses given. It hasn't really been very helpful so far This is a very misleading talking point being spread around today, including by the White House. Very disappointing. * J&J only requires one dose while all the others require two doses. So counting doses is misleading. J&J represents more than 10% of the actual full vaccinations. Many two dose vaccinations have not been completed (some will never be). * The US has ordered 200 million doses J&J doses and a total of 600 million doses of the two dose vaccines. So J&J represents 40% of the full vaccinations ordered to date. * J&J vaccine was only approved on February 27th while Pfizer and Moderna were approved back on December 11th and 18th, respectively. People pushing this 5% number as obviously trying to put the best face on this screw up.
- thehappypm 6y agoThe 5% number is a fact. There's no agenda behind it -- 95% of all shots-in-arms so far is non-J&J.
