The problem is the multiple aspects. When people are attacking/defending they are often doing so on different aspects of RMS.
RMS aspects include:
1. size of contribution to FOSS
2. current ongoing contribution to FOSS
3. his views on all manner of non-FOSS topics
I would defend him on 1 but not the others.
