In fact, addons.mozilla.org automatically bumped the maxVersion field for extensions that didn't touch any of the APIs changed in Firefox 5. Later, they did the same trick for Firefox 6 (currently the Aurora branch). I'm running Aurora right now, and almost all of my extensions are marked as compatible.
