A slate or two might fall off in a storm - that's pretty much it apart from clearing out gutters which I can do. We are in a fairly exposed position overlooking the sea with no shelter from the south east where storm winds are likely to come from - but that's the price for great views! I think as long as you don't let multiple slates come off in the same area (and therefore run the risk of water getting in) slate roofs pretty much last forever - they are stone after all!
