The headline is an amusing play. In fact as the subtitle declares, there is no mystery at all. Some people who are fully vaccinated still get sick, often with mild or asymptomatic presentations, and that's what happened to the author.
Keep your masks on. This is the home stretch (at least here in the US it is), but vaccination alone is only part of the puzzle. The pandemic is over when the case counts drop near zero (probably not to zero, pretty much everyone expect covid to persist as a normal endemic disease) and stay there. Until then we need to practice all the same defense in depth techniques. Even if we're vaccinated.
- nate_meurer 6y agoI don't think we'll ever get even close to zero. I think we'll see recurrent "surges" that behave like seasonal flu. At some point it will be just another bug, and the vaccinations will be packaged with our flu shots, or at least offered concurrently.
- Gibbon1 6y agoI don't think people in the US understand what the rest of the world is going to do if the country thinks it can get away with covid19 being endemic.

- nate_meurer 6y agoI'm in the USA. Can you elaborate?
- Gibbon1 6y agoWell not being able to travel to other countries at all. For one.
- nate_meurer 6y agoDo you think it's feasible to eliminate the virus worldwide?
- Gibbon1 6y agoYes we did with small pox
- nate_meurer 6y agoAnd we've gotten close with polio :)
- chrismcb 6y agoI'm not sure I understand this comment. It's not like the rest of the world is going to eliminate covid and the us isn't.
- coding123 6y agoThere is no home stretch. This will likely mean masks on for the rest of time...
- newacct583 6y agoNo, for the converse reason: sufficient immunity from a virus may not be enough to protect us fully in the presence of an active pandemic, but is is enough to push the R value below 1, such that the outbreaks shrink instead of growing. We're seeing that already in Israel and possibly the UK. The US is up next.
