Is the trend of Turing.com/Andela/Upstack moving US remote dev jobs to overseas?
has any US engineer really taken jobs from Turing.com ? or is the trend of Turing.com/Andela/Upstack taking US remote dev jobs to overseas?
I am a dev in a LA based software company, in the past year of 2020 pandemic as permanent remote got popularized, I am also seeing a trend my company is hiring more and more from such agencies (Turing/Andela/Upstack/...) with developers from overseas (Brazil/Ukraine/Nigeria/...), and whenever a US based dev quit, the company can hire 3 or more devs from such oversea places, and the company has actually ceased hiring within US, even though our company's website career still shows hiring within US, but I know all recently joined ones are based overseas (via some such agencies), no new ones within US were hired for at least many months as far as I know; a dev based in such oversea countries can live well on $1k or $2k month, but a US based engineer cannot even survive; now I become the only few US based on the team, and I don't feel good about my company's future;

TL;DR: they are OK but they take more than 50% of your paycheck forever and give you practically zero benefits for it. It’s better to avoid them and wait for another opportunity.

- tZdKRNGW 5y agoand look at the Crunchbase profile of Turing.com , they actually got a lot of attention from VCs, (raised over $40M during 2020) and more similar hiring agencies are copying this business model, this crewscale.com has an almost full list in their comparison: Toptal, Crewscale, Upwork, Turing, Upstack, Fiverr, ... As this list will for sure grow longer and longer, many US employers will get lured into this model, hiring junior to mid seniors from such agencies instead, so in not-far future, will this hiring model become a mainstream? Are any US based engineers getting this fear? I know for the top ones who earns $500k+ annually, your job will probably still be kept in US, but all the whole size of US software dev jobs will largely shift to overseas, for those junior to mid-senior levels, your jobs are not replaced by AIs but more probably lost to overseas https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/turing https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/turing https://www.crewscale.com/ https://www.crewscale.com/ COMPARE Crewscale Vs Toptal Toptal Alternative Crewscale Vs Upwork Upwork Alternative Crewscale Vs Turing Turing Alternative Crewscale Vs Upstack Crewscale Vs Fiverr Crewscale Vs Andela
- TOSSAWAY_1 5y agoIm pretty sure that was on the ballot during the recent election and the Americans voted against that sort of protectionist mindset.
- tZdKRNGW 5y agoit depends on whom do you stand for? as a US-based remote developer, like in this Quora thread, you for sure don't want to work via Turing/Andela/Upstack/... for a US employer, right? because Turing/Andela/Upstack/... are withholding more than 50% of your income as their profit, that's why these kinds of agencies can get high profit / high funding and high valuation from Crunchbase link you can see; https://www.quora.com/Has-anyone-tried-Turing-Is-it-any-good-for-finding-gigs-What-does-the-process-look-like-after-registering-with-them https://www.quora.com/Has-anyone-tried-Turing-Is-it-any-good... > TL;DR: they are OK but they take more than 50% of your paycheck forever and give you practically zero benefits for it. It’s better to avoid them and wait for another opportunity. If you're with entrepreneur mindset want to hire, or standing as US employer point of view, you'll more probably like to hire 3 oversea's remote role than a single US-based, or only hiring 1/10th in the US to manage rest of all overseas; as I've shown in the LA based software company; If you are already the top earning ones ($500k+), you have no concerns for yourself, but for next generation new graduates, I have seen this trend of a US company would rather hire overseas via those agencies instead of hiring the US based, I am seeing a pessimistic future for them As of 2021, there may not be many US companies seeing this opportunity to cut R&D costs yet, but as the list of Crewscale/Turing/Andela/Upstack/... growing longer and longer, many of them are aggressively reaching to US employers for upselling remote devs (overseas), then majority of US employers will be able to see Another example here: Invision is another US employer (New York based), back in 2019 their major hiring were still US-based W2 employment, forward to 2021 they are seeing the great opportunity to hire via upstack... https://twitter.com/upstackhq/status/1374826625108426764 https://twitter.com/upstackhq/status/1374826625108426764
- shams93 5y agoIts pretty gruesome here, with nobody really looking out for the rights of US workers you can only expect more and more civil unrest, as Bob Marley once said, a hungry mob is an angry mob! Not to promote or condone out of control mobs but when you simply push people out of the economy while those of us better off can fall in with family a lot of others are being pushed into a brick wall, the ruling class simply wants to crush you out of existence if it cannot hyper-exploit your labor.

- tedeh 5y agoI don't know much about this company but they have been emailing me three times this year. I've never signed up, visited their website, or used them, no idea how they got my email. My guess is it was stolen from Github, but whatever. Their email starts with "I saw your profile" (uhh, which one?) and ends with "Best regards, Turing Team" (wait, a team and not a person is mailing me all of the sudden?). All three emails have exactly the same body text, and all have a typo in my first name. So it doesn't exactly inspire confidence.
- tZdKRNGW 5y agoyou can see they got a lot of attention and funding from VCs during the past year 2020, basically their business model is to gain as many developer's profile as possible, use all ways to convince you sign up at some low rate ($20-$50/hr, or $3000-5000 monthly) and try to upsell your profile to US remote employers, can be charging US employers for ($50-$150/hr) and keep more than 50% as profit, https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/turing/company_financials https://www.crunchbase.com/organization/turing/company_finan... Dec 10, 2020 Series B - Turing.com $32M Westbridge Capital Aug 25, 2020 Seed Round - Turing.com $14M Foundation Capital So, if you are US based developer you'd better keep far away from them as far as possible, even $5k can't have a good decent life because they provide zero benefits, no medical / no pay for leave days; but for some undeveloped countries, $1-3k monthly can be good income If you are US-based, and are already the top earning ones ($500k+), you may have no concerns for your own future, but for next generation new graduates, I have seen this trend of a US company would rather hire overseas via those agencies instead of hiring the US based, I am seeing a pessimistic future for them I am posting this thread also because my friend's nephew at last year of college asked me if there's any internship at the company I am working, as I know for each prior years there were always some number of college graduates internship, but now it's all gone, the company is just hiring more and more overseas instead; I'm feeling sorry to my friend, and as the list of Crewscale/Turing/Andela/Upstack/... growing longer and longer, this can happen to any American's nephew
