I have noticed that Anglo-American cultures tend to have two reactions to substances: over-indulgence and total abolition. It strikes me as a very unhealthy relationship.
Places in Southern Europe like France or Italy have a much more reasonable approach to alcohol. Perhaps we should aim to emulate them and not continue teetering between being teetotalers and drunkards.

The rest of us in the 90% who just have a little bit with a meal occasionally never get noticed. So comparisons between countries and cultures has more to do with perception than statistics.
