Why It’s So Hard to Speak Up Against a Toxic Culture
- uberman 6y agoThe article states: "Those working in HR departments have the responsibility to assure that people are treated fairly at work." I'm disappointed by this characterization from HBR. Perhaps it could be argued that HR has an ethical responsibility to do so, but this is not why large companies have HR departments. HR's responsibility to the worker is to ensure they are treated legally. Apart from that, HR departments are there to protect the company from the worker, not the other way around. The reason it is hard for people to speak up about injustice in general is the same reason it is hard for people to intervene during an assault. Bystanders and witnesses fear they will become victims if they get involved.
