TUI 737 weight incident traced to ‘Miss’ interpretation of female passengers
- ashneo76 6y agoThe weight was calculated based off "miss" vs "ms" in the name?? Instead of getting the age from the passport and doing a look up against standardized tables?? This is BS.
- BoorishBears 6y agoI don't know what part of the article seems like BS? Wrong assumption in programming, math checks out to show it'd be a very large discrepancy, where's the BSing?
- ashneo76 6y agoThe requirements. In retrospect, not the correct choice of words. Nothing to do with the article. I am sorry for leading you down the wrong track. I mean like who decided on the requirements of this project? And how was this approved? That is what I calling as a bs job where someone just slept at the wheel.
- yunohn 6y agoExactly what I was thinking. In what way is this reliable? Using age is the most logical approach compared to this lazy idea.
- decker 6y agoIf they really depend on this for takeoff weight, I have to wonder why they don't just ask passengers for their weight then add 20% or something.
- jen20 6y agoSome airlines do (or at least did) weigh passengers on some routes [1]. [1]: https://onemileatatime.com/hawaiian-weighing-passengers-samoa/ https://onemileatatime.com/hawaiian-weighing-passengers-samo...
- zeroimpl 6y agoSo what do they do for men? Is there something other than "Mr" which is routinely used to identify male children?
- jbaber 6y agoUsed to be "Master". I got junk mail addressed to "Master Lastname" when I was a child.
- bcrl 6y agoDumb question here: why don't airplanes incorporate weight sensors in the landing gear to eliminate this problem?
- mannykannot 6y agoI have been wondering the same thing. I would have thought the oleo strut would have all the moving parts you would need for such a gauge, lacking only a position sensor (perhaps temerature-compensated.) Not only would you get weight, but also the center of gravity location, which can be deadly if out of limits. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Midwest_Flight_5481 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Midwest_Flight_5481 (Note that in this case, a maintenance error compounded the problem.)
