Pretty much. In all seriousness, it was used a bit like that. I know of a bank who set up excel "farms". You'd start a bunch of computers somewhere. Send them a spreadsheet. Have Excel open them and run some macros. Get back the results. They would do it to calculate various scenarios that took a long time to run. That was 2007...
