If the virus is "more like a cold for most of the population", why do I need a vaccine?
- MisterBastahrd 6y agoBecause "most" is not "all" and people die from complications of colds, too. I've never been diagnosed with a flu in my life but I've had COVID twice. The first time, I was pulling strings of bloody mucus out of my throat and couldn't lay on my back and sleep for a week. The second time I lost my sense of taste and smell and it also wrecked my energy levels. I'm still not where I was before Dec 23 with regards to energy or tasting / smelling. It's not fun and nobody's invulnerable.
- julianlam 6y agoVaccination isn't only for yourself, it has demonstrable benefits for the community as well. Even at the macro level -- if you were not vaccinated, and contracted COVID-19, and later on passed it on to your parents or other elderly people, that is something entirely preventable.
- loveistheanswer 6y ago>later on passed it on to your parents or other elderly people, that is something entirely preventable. Weren't those types of higher risk people the first ones to have the vaccine made available to them?
- MisterBastahrd 6y agoWe wouldn't be having a herd immunity discussion at all if people were rational and got the vaccine when it was made available.
- loveistheanswer 6y agoScientifically speaking, that's not true >herd immunity: resistance to the spread of an infectious disease within a population that is based on pre-existing immunity of a high proportion of individuals as a result of previous infection or vaccination.
- oliv__ 6y agoIf the "community" wants to get vaccinated and be immune, all the power to them. I still don't see why I should get vaccinated if the people at risk are immune.
- IgorPartola 6y agoLet’s play a game! You walk into a room where I am standing with a gun. The gun has a 100 round magazine. I explain that 1 of the rounds is live and will kill you. Also 3 rounds will not kill you but will backfire in a way that may or may not permanently injure you. There is also some number of blanks and some number of rubber bullets that would hurt you for a week or two but will not permanently injure you. The rounds were loaded randomly into the gun so the next round fired could be any of the above. I ask you to point the gun at one of your friends and pull the trigger once. Do you do it? Or do you put on a mask and get vaccinated and wait for the world to open up enough so your friend does not have to face that gun?
- reportgunner 6y agoWhat if I point it back at you and pull the trigger ?
- IgorPartola 6y agoThen one of those outcomes happens and you and your friend get to live with that decision and outcome the rest of your lives. This virus kills. Not necessarily the people that took the risks, but possibly innocent bystanders. Our decisions affect people we know and people we don’t and some of them become life or death decisions whether we understand them or not.
- reportgunner 6y agoClassic trolley problem. I would sleep well knowing that you probably won't make up games involving guns and friends any more.
- oliv__ 6y agoMore like a gun with a 1000 round magazine.
