I have to be honest, I struggle to think of a scenario where simply putting the computer to sleep isn't the better option. If power draw is a concern, just power the computer off? It's certainly not worth having a 16 or 32 GB swap partition on my machine just to enable hibernate
- jcheng 6y agoI was hoping to replace my laptop with a NUC running Linux, that I would transport between home and office. Since a NUC is a (small) desktop machine it doesn’t have a battery. Hibernate would have been great.
- aksss 6y agoHibernate IS great, IMO. It saves massive battery life, nobody cares about the hiberfile size with large disks, and for me it’s often more reliable than S3 sleep. Sleep may run out of battery and I lose everything open. Sleep may not power back up correctly and I lose everything open. I only use sleep mode for short trips between locations, with car rides or walking to another office. But overnight? Hibernate or shutdown for me.
- alerighi 6y agoFor desktop computers it makes sense. I find that hybrid hibernation gets the best of the two world. I can have the PC in sleep and have it turn on faster, or if the PC looses power you don't loose anything. A thing that I do often is that I forget my desktop PC in sleep mode but still powered, and since I know that hibernation works I can simply cut power to the whole power strip to save energy without having to wake up the PC just to shut it down correctly and then remove power safely. By the way, you can also have a swap file, but it's not as simple to configure (and still the file size is kind of fixed and that removes the point).

- detaro 6y agoa bit of storage is easily worth the benefit for me. Now if I had some superthin laptop with soldered-in SSD at exorbitant pricing that might be different, but other than that disk space is not that much at a premium.
