The Gas Industry Is Paying Instagram Influencers to Gush over Gas Stoves
- Bostonian 6y agoClimate change activists have gotten some cities to ban new gas hookups. I am much more concerned by that coercion than with the gas industry promoting gas stoves.
- toomuchtodo 6y agoThe world is on its way to broiling, one should not be surprised there are efforts to dissuade the unnecessary use of fossil fuels. Induction stoves are very efficient and pleasant to use, heat pump HVAC and water heaters are very efficient, leaving only geographies where gas fired furnaces are a must for heating needs where gas service need be continued.
- floatingatoll 6y agoWith only the word “coercion” to go on here, it’s quite difficult to understand your viewpoint. Is the sum total of your concern that cities are finding common ground with emissions activists? Will prohibitions of natural gas stoves in new buildings harm your livelihood? Are their faults in the emissions science that you feel aren’t being taken into account? Tell us more of your story so that we can hear and listen to you.
- ArkanExplorer 6y agoEver since I got an electric pressure cooker I've used my oven and stovetop about twice in half a year. Combine that with a decent heat pump for heating, and a gas connection seems totally unnecessary if you're in a relatively warm country.
- culopatin 6y agoYou never use a pan? No sautéed vegetables? No pan searing? No sauces? What things other than stews can a pressure cooker make?
- jfengel 6y agoI suspect that by "electric pressure cooker" they mean "instant pot" or related device. You can sautee and deglaze in them, or so I read. (I haven't tried and doubt it's as effective as what I do in a skillet, but I can believe it would do a tolerable job.)
- culopatin 6y agoI’m no lobbyist but electric stove tops suck. I’ve been looking to try an induction stovetop. Seems to improve over the gas one by heating up the pan and not the air around it, and I’m hoping they can be set at a constant 10% instead of a very slow PWM like the electric ones.
- YourDumb2 6y agoI don't understand why you say electric stove tops suck, then go on to say they are an improvement over gas?? "Electric stove tops suck, but I'm still looking to get one"
- Doxin 6y agoElectric stovetop usually refers to the type with a heating coil. In my experience these are awful. Induction stovetops, while also electric, use a induction to heat the pan directly instead of relying on conducting heat from a heating coil. In my experience these are great and will heat a pot to a boil much faster than any gas stove I've used so far. Not to mention having more than two settings on your stove is lovely for temperature management. The terminology is confusing, but such is life.
- pengaru 6y agoI have a 50s-era GM Frigidaire electric stove+oven and there's no PWM anywhere. It's simply multiple choice knobs for predefined temperature settings selecting how much current to continuously flow through the heating elements. It's by far the best electric stove I've ever used, I love it and dread the day all knobs have let the 240VAC smoke out.
- neuralRiot 6y agoIs there electric ranges in commercial kitchens?
- ksaj 6y agoIn many cases, that can be a function of cost and not effectiveness.
