Rates of Parkinson’s disease are exploding. A common chemical may be to blame
- fiftyacorn 6y agoIts so depressing to think the ground water has been allowed to get so polluted we now need to use water filters
- JPLeRouzic 6y agoI am not an expert, but I think it needs more than Brita filters (as suggested by Guardian's article) to effectively remove chemicals from water.
- JPLeRouzic 6y agoA quick check on Pubmed shows only 23 articles associating TCE and Parkinson. It seems there was a surge in 2015 with not less than 5 articles that year. Each year there are ~10,000 articles on Parkinson disease indexed by Pubmed.
- 37ef_ced3 6y agoIt's because we stopped smoking. Nicotine protects against Parkinson's disease: https://n.neurology.org/content/94/20/e2132 https://n.neurology.org/content/94/20/e2132 After adjustment for age at risk, current smokers at baseline had a 30% lower risk of PD (RR 0.71; 95% CI 0.60–0.84), and continuing smokers classified using updated smoking habits at resurvey had a 40% lower risk (RR 0.60; 95% CI 0.46–0.77) of PD compared with never smokers. The risks of PD were inversely associated with the amount of tobacco smoked. The protective effect of current smoking vs never smoking for PD was attenuated by increasing duration since quitting smoking.
- ohgreatwtf 6y agomy father loves TCE. Cleans all his hydraulic systems with it. Practically bathed in it. Loves glysophosphate and atrazine too. Mid 50s, doesn’t worry about being 70 and having the shakes because living for today. Not sure if his attitude is wrong. Maybe I should start smoking per another commenter?
- 37ef_ced3 6y agoNicotine gum works, too, without the harm of smoking
- wombatmobile 6y agoWhat is the mechanism through which TCE is suspected of causing PD?
