For people reading these comments, Dubliners is amazing short story collection, on a level of its own. The Penguin Classic printing of it is what I have, and it's ideal because it has 76 pages of notes for all of the stories. Those cover phrases that were lost in the last 100 years, description of locations in Dublin, explanations of cultural differences, etc. Ulysses is very difference, but if wanting to read Joyce, my suggestion is to start with the Dubliners.
