Writing software is closer to learning how to draw or how to carve wood. It’s a thing you can “do” over the weekend, it’s fun, and it’s practical. After writing hello world you can call yourself a programmer, which sounds impressive. It’s much harder to even get to hello world for a doctor or a lawyer. Of course, there’s a long road to doing it well. I can call myself an artist for having used a paintbrush before, but I’m not actually an artist by any sane definition.
