Fortran, a 70-year-old computer language, lands back on the top 20
- desktopninja 6y agoTo quote an (open sourced =D) T1000: "Old but not obsolete"
- iagovar 6y agoI'm still surprised that Pascal has such little midshare with something like Lazarus.
- leephillips 6y agoI suggest linking to the original article at https://www.zdnet.com/article/this-old-programming-language-is-suddenly-getting-more-popular-again/ https://www.zdnet.com/article/this-old-programming-language-... rather than to this product-placement filled blogspam factory.
- duskwuff 6y agoSigh. TIOBE again. Things TIOBE believes: * Visual Basic is more popular than JavaScript * D is more popular than Lua * Scratch is more popular than TypeScript * The popularity of C declined by 50% between 2015 and 2017, and then returned to its previous value in 2018 * Visual Basic became dramatically more popular in early 2020 This is all because TIOBE is based on counting search engine results. It's heavily influenced by changes in search engine algorithms, the "searchability" of language names, and SEO spam -- not necessarily by real changes in the marketplace.
- gus_massa 6y agoFor comparison, C has 50 years. But C has evolved a lot and Fortran has evolved a lot in this 50/70 years.
