“As proof, a large number of images showing the process of a base model M1 MacBook Air with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage being upgraded to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, and this change being correctly shown in macOS Big Sur, have been shared online.” IMO, that’s not very surprising. Apple sells such setups, so all it shows is that the smaller models run the same hardware as the smaller ones, so that careful soldering can turn one into the other, or repair such a device. A more surprising result would be if they managed to fit 32GB RAM, as that would mean the chip has the extra address line to accommodate that.
