I'm really pleased that the ESP-Now part actually works as it does mean the Walkie-Talkie can operate without being connected to an actual WiFi network. According to people on the internet you can get about 200m range with ESP-Now and I've seen some people claim to get 480m!
I do need to look at some light weight codecs that will run in software to really call the project complete. At the moment it's just streaming raw audio which is fine, but feels slightly cheating.
- m-p-3 6y agoWould Opus be lightweight enough?

- iamflimflam1 6y agoThat’s awesome. I did have a brief look at using the half rate GSM codec and I got it running. But it did take almost all the CPU with not much left over for anything else. The ESP32 does have two cores though so you could have one core dedicated to encoding and put everything else on the other core. The other option I’m looking at is SBC which is supposed to be lightweight. Opus looks very promising.
