Great article and I think there should be more discussion around the usage of anti-depression medication.
Imagine you have a bullet in your arm. It's causing a lot of pain. Using anti-depressants is like putting a Band-Aid over the bullet wound. It might stop the bleeding temporarily, but it doesn't address the root of the issue. To actually solve the problem, you need to remove the bullet. Anti-depressant drugs will never address the root of the problem.
The author brought up an example of a woman with a husband who is having an affair. A woman with an unfaithful husband has a situation she must deal with immediately, and this is an obvious source of depression. But if she goes to her pharmacist and prescribes herself a bunch of anti-depressant pills instead of confronting her husband, that's not helping her solve her problems.
I feel the same way about ADHD. I don't think ADHD is a problem at all. It is a "problem" in today's world because the work that we do in today world, which revolves around sitting at a desk for 8-10 hours a day, is unnatural. Being easily distracted by your surroundings is likely an evolutionary advantage if you're trying to survive in the wilderness, which is what our pre-historic ancestors did most of their lives. To help people cope with their unnatural environment, we got Adderall and caffeine.
Perhaps the root of the problem in this case, is capitalism. I still think capitalism is the best system but, it motivates businessmen to create solutions that people think they want, but not what they actually need. Pharma companies have billions of dollars at stake in creating a magic pill to "cure" depression, but instead, the drugs they make only help people procrastinate on their problems and hurt them in the long run.
