Is Performant a Word?
- tgflynn 6y agoI haven't heard it used in English but it is a very commonly used word in French. Perhaps it is in the process of being borrowed, like many other words have been from one language to the other.
- dragonwriter 6y agoEvery English dictionary I can find disagrees with this site; “performant” is a word. Being able to buy a domain name doesn’t give you a veto on the language. It also often has a very clear meaning in-context, especially when used comparatively. Is it sometimes used vaguely? Sure. But that’s not the word’s problem, it is because the user is deliberately being vague.
- detaro 6y agoThe fact that someone made this website suggests it is used often enough that yes, it is a word.
- a3n 6y agoIt's no less a word than perform or performance. Is its meaning knowable? Yes? Then it's a word.
- ksaj 6y agoGoogle also adds this meaning: noun RARE a person who performs a duty or ceremony. And the etymology they provide says it had that use in the early 1800's. It also says the adjective use of the word started in computing in the 1980's. But no word on why dictionaries avoid it. Some people argue it isn't in the dictionary because it's more like jargon. But there are a LOT of jargon words in the dictionary. To me it is interesting that the word has come about "jargonistically" two different times, and with two completely unrelated meanings.
