I remember unrelated talk by Node.js author when talking about Deno and the mistakes of Node, “don’t try to be cute when designing a language”. (Or something along those lines.) Perl design seems like it tries to be “cute” and “clever” almost every design decision. “Hey let’s name it bless, hey add unless and if too”. Even the documentation tries to be all funny and jokey. The language suffers for it, when you actually try to do something serious.
