Can someone please explain this formulation "Black Indigenous and People of Color" (BIPOC)? It seems to have arisen out of the blue last year. It's redundant, since black people are also people of color. And, assuming indigenous means the people formerly known as American Indians or Native Americans, aren't they also considered POC? So why not just say "people of color"?
- ipsocannibal 6y agoThis is the same process that turned LGBT into LGBTQIA+. Each sub-group wants to be mentioned in the acronym because "representation" and "solidarity" but it needs to be ordered in terms of size/cohesiviness/level of persecution then because of how the English language is written and how human memory works new letters are tacked on to the end instead of reordering or substituting letters. These groups dislike being described in relation to the groups they feel oppress them. BIPOC = non-white, LGBTQIA+ = non-heterosexuals
