GeForce GPU Passthrough for Windows Virtual Machine (Beta)
- coolspot 6y agoThat’s cool, they are enabling it because of Linux gaming demand: > With virtualization enabled, GeForce customers on a Linux host PC can now enable GeForce GPU passthrough on a virtual Windows guest OS. There are a few GeForce use cases where this functionality is beneficial such as: > GeForce customers wanting to run a Linux host and be able to launch a Windows virtual machine (VM) to play games > Game developers wanting to test code in both Windows and Linux on one machine
- conradludgate 6y agoMaybe I'm missing something, isn't this already possible? I have a Linux machine running Windows with GPU passthrough just fine
- watersb 6y agoI can't tell from TFA -- is this announcement about sharing the GPU with the host machine? I don't know how to do passthrough with a GPU that's being used be the host. Haven't tried since 2010, though..
- conradludgate 6y ago> One GPU is required for the Linux host OS and one GPU is required for the Windows virtual machine.
- genocidicbunny 6y agoI personally haven't ever done it, so this is a genuine question. Don't you have to have to have a setup that has the correct IOMMU topology for that to work? Seems this might be a more plug-and-play solution that works more broadly, or as mentioned in the sibling comment, can be shared with the host?
- moistbar 6y agoIt is, but you have to do some extra configuration to hide the type of GPU from the guest OS. It doesn't matter what you call the card, either, so I usually name it something like "fuckyounvidia"
- thebruce87m 6y agoNeeds two GPUs to work? “One GPU is required for the Linux host OS and one GPU is required for the Windows virtual machine.”
