Yay a supporter of apartheid wins a Turing!
- echelon 6y agoI tried googling it and didn't find anything. Is this still the opinion they hold?
- DSingularity 6y agoOnly Ullman — he never renounced his views.
- dragonwriter 6y agoThat about as relevant as saying “someone who can’t code fizzbuzz won a Nobel Peace Prize”.
- DSingularity 6y agoOnly to people who don’t mind adoring someone for their technical feats while ignoring their unethical positions.
- miltondts 6y agoA person is a very complex, multi faceted system. If we don't like one particular aspect of that person, must we condemn everything that he does?
- DSingularity 6y agoIf that one thing is severe, yeah absolutely!
- randomsearch 6y agoWhy?
- higerordermap 6y agoYeah never forgive someone because they were once politically incorrect in some unrelated matter. Is political correctness a religion?
- ykl 6y agoHere's a letter that Ullman signed (5th name up from the bottom) that seems to pretty explicitly condemn apartheid in South Africa [1]. The letter's main argument is that Israel is not an apartheid state (which I guess is something of a controversial topic) but overall the sentiment of the letter reads to me as "apartheid is bad". - DSingularity 6y agoHow can Israel not be considered an apartheid state? You cannot simply dismiss the apartheid as “malicious propaganda” while condemning it. Unless of course you don’t mind what is happening but want to pretend like you are against it.
