What is the best Cut-Out-The-Middleman, DIY project one could take on?
Hey! Hope yall are doing good.
I'm a junior developer and I'm looking for something along the lines of what I described in the title. Some examples include making your own email server or making your own ISP (too expensive).
I'm looking for something to actually do, with maybe a team of two to three people, and it can take as long as a couple of years to accomplish.
I'm looking for something that's practically useful - for example having your own email server offers various benefits.
As for the know-how - I'm open to learning new things as I am building what I'm building, and spend some if not most of the time learning as I go.
Thanks!
- bckr 6y agoWhat itches are you looking to scratch? Sounds like you're excited about email servers.
- Mushonim 6y agoHahaha yeah I am. What itches.. Mostly the idea that I can communicate with the outside world using tools I built on my own and not having to rely on anyone else.
- bckr 6y agoSounds like you should go with email server. Just see how far you can go with that. I wouldn't spend more than a week considering alternatives before jumping in and building.
- hosteur 6y agoDo you want to do this as a business or a hobby or something else?
- Mushonim 6y agoRight now, mostly as a hobby :)
- 100011_100001 6y agoEmail server, DNS, host your own website locally. If you want to play around with tools write your own shell.
- runawaybottle 6y agoCreate a doordash delivery system for restaurants with lower fees.
- tudelo 6y agoI thought most companies succeed in this area by eating cost. I guess if you wanted to remain hyper local it might be possible?
- runawaybottle 6y agoIf the cost is sales, sure. Make the system and walk to that restaurant and get them to use it.
