In Ovo raises funding and hits milestone 150k chicks hatched without culling
- jfengel 6y agoWell, that's something. Good on 'em. I wonder what "eggs identified as male can be discarded before a fetus develops". Are the eggs just destroyed, or can they be used for food (perhaps industrially)? It just feels a little weird watching people get fussed over the deaths of chicks while still eating the meat of grown animals. I don't expect perfect rationality on what is fundamentally an emotional decision, and we've always known that there are lots of hypocrisies that we don't want to look at too closely. Like the way we just live with the knowledge that it's OK to eat a pig but horrifying to eat a dog. I don't mean that judgmentally. Life is complicated and we make arbitrary judgments all the time. It's just interesting to watch this thing that we've lived with all this time, and mostly managed to ignore because we didn't think about it. Having found out about it might have caused us to push back on other assumptions. Instead, we teched our way around it. Which is pretty impressive.
