So the author's theories certainly resonate. I started my professional career in the mid-80s and yes, having facility with C and pointers in particular was critical. I can remember asking potential candidates around that time to explain the practical differences between doubly dimensioned arrays and pointers to pointers.
Without a doubt, a SIGSEGV was always a prelude to a painful session with adb trying to track down where your arithmetic had gone wrong.
