cliff notes: battery as a structural component of car, bike, aircraft instead of a separate component, like a car frame.
saves weight. not as energy dense as lithium ion, but they're working on it.
"The scientists say the next step is to improve the performance even more, replacing aluminum foil in the electrode with carbon fiber material and thinning out the separator. This could result in a battery that produces 75 Wh/kg of energy and 75 GPa of stiffness, setting more records for massless batteries and also greatly reducing their weight. "

Certain corporate overlords of planned obsolescence would love it. Sorry, you have to throw out your car because the batteries died in 5 years and _woops, the batteries are the cars_
- moistbar 6y agoGod forbid that car gets in an accident.
- moistbar 6y agoStructural batteries would be the worst possible "advancement" we could make in that particular arena. First, if the battery is fully incorporated with the structure, you have to discard the whole product when the batteries stop holding a charge. I hate the environment as much as the next guy, but that seems a bit excessive. Second, if you're using these in, say, a car, what happens when that car gets in an accident? What would have been minor, potentially only even cosmetic damage, now requires a full rebuild of the vehicle...to the point that most people will likely throw them away after one accident.
- genericone 6y agoStructural member often implies a module central to all other components, but it doesn't have to be that way, a structural battery could still be bolted on to a under-spec structural frame to bring it within strength specs. I think what you are really against is the concept of the all-in-one car-frame-battery.
