Coworkers code kept overrunning limits on resources and either getting evicted, OOM’d or grinding to a halt.
I gently suggested that they profile and optimise the code - and offered time to help. They insisted instead that “oh no we can’t do that! It’s just how it is” and insisted that we instead throw another machine or 2 on the cluster.
Pointing out that fixing the underlying problem would save us money on instances and probably meant that we’d not have to spend more time on cluster management as a result of this app ever again than it would have taken to optimise it even slightly was totally lost on my boss.
2 months after I left: coworker was messaging me asking what we could do to get the costs down.
