China's answer to YouTube slumps on market debut
- yorwba 6y agoSurely Bilibili is actually the answer to "where can I watch anime and mingle with others in the 2D subculture", a market which YouTube doesn't seem similarly interested in. (YouTube has the subculture, but AFAIK no licensing deals with Japanese studios. If they do have licensed content for paying customers, they're not advertising them very well.)
- zinekeller 6y agoThere's a Japanese site (which is accessible unless blocked beyond control) called Niconico which hosts these kinds of videos, and more professional streaming sites such as the Crunchyroll (under acquisition by Sony), Funimation (subsidiary of Sony) or the Japanese Hulu (under control of NTV, a Japanese media conglomerate). In other words, I don't think YouTube has a chance here, unless they were technically under Play Movies.
- sjg007 6y agoI'm not sure the American market has figured this one out yet. I'm sure there is some version of this coming though.
- tanylak 6y agoGet them a new name maybe?
- em500 6y agoBilibili is a minority player in China, so it's pretty weird to present then as "China's answer to YouTube". I'm pretty sure the biggest video platforms are still iQiyi, Tencent video and Youku (with none of them having a dominant position like Youtube).
