Two anecdotes: I started a small company making software components. It was tough getting people to pay for them. A few years later big companies started doing the thing for free so that was the end of that. Back in the job my employer bought Rational Rose, it was super expensive and one of the worst designed slowest pieces of junk I've ever used. Now there were so many free libraries and tools around I'm never paying for anything again.
